Event Information:
Arline Kardasis, co-author of Mom Always Liked You Best: A Guide for Resolving Family Feuds, Inheritance Battles & Eldercare Crises (2011), will share her experiences as an Elder Mediator in Massachusetts who has helped adult family members reach consensus on some of the most difficult decisions they have ever faced together. Drawing from her work with Geriatric Care Managers, she will discuss the types of disputes that GCMs have referred to her firm and will explain why families get “stuck ” in a conflict. This program will provide insights and techniques for GCMs to help them “think like a mediator” in order to uncover the interests that are at the heart of every dispute. She will also discuss how to: convene a productive family meeting, determine who should be at the table, and craft an agenda that can create a roadmap to resolution.

This program will provide you with new skills for working with challenging families and help you to determine when a mediator might be needed. Mediators frequently refer to GCMs to provide the professional advice needed for families in crises and GCMs can call upon mediators when their clients’ needs are not being met due to ongoing discord among family members. Arline will discuss recent cases where GCMs and Elder Mediators have worked hand and glove to help families move forward when the well-being of a loved one was at risk.

Objectives:
Participants will be able to:

Identify the most common conflicts encountered by families and aging family members.

Apply techniques to convene productive family meetings.

Determine when a mediator may be the intervention of choice (or determine when to use the services of a mediator).

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America welcomes healthcare professionals to participate in our 9th Annual National Memory Screening Day on Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Community sites nationwide will offer free, confidential memory screenings and educational materials to the public. Here’s how you can help: host a screening site, offer to be a screener, encourage people with memory concerns to be screened, post a Web banner about the event, spread the word. To sign up as a participating site or to locate a site in your community, visit http://www.nationalmemoryscreening.org/. 866-AFA-8484

As the nation’s population increasingly focuses on healthy aging, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) urges individuals concerned about memory problems or who want to check their memory now and for future comparison to take a free screening during its 9th annual National Memory Screening Day on November 15. Qualified healthcare professionals will provide the confidential screenings and educational materials about memory problems, caregiving and successful aging at community sites from coast to coast. The test consists of a series of simple questions and tasks, and takes about five to ten minutes to administer. These memory screenings do not represent a diagnosis. AFA advises individuals who score poorly or who have normal scores but are still concerned to follow up with their clinicians.

Additional Information:
• November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.

• National Memory Screening Day (NMSD) is an annual initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America in collaboration with healthcare professionals and community organizations across the country. (Sites are listed at http://www.nationalmemoryscreening.org/)

• This year’s event marks the ninth year that the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is holding NMSD; in 2010, over 2,300 organizations participated nationwide and an estimated 60,000+ people were screened.

• It is estimated that as many as 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. The incidence is rising in line with the nation’s aging population.

• Advanced age is the greatest risk known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, with the incidence of the disease doubling every five years beyond the age of 65.

• NMSD is the focal point of AFA’s year-round efforts to raise awareness of the need for early detection of memory problems, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. (See AFA’s “Memory Matters” report-www.alzfdn.org/documents/memorymatters.pdf)
At least half of the cases of mild and moderate dementia go undetected by physicians.
Early diagnosis can facilitate better treatment since numerous studies show that available medical treatments can help delay progression of symptoms.
Early diagnosis enables individuals with the disease to obtain appropriate medical treatment and behavioral management interventions, be more involved in long-term planning, and obtain social services support for themselves and their families.

• The face-to-face screening is administered by a qualified healthcare professional (i.e., physicians, psychologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, pharmacists); consists of a series of questions and tasks; and takes about five to ten minutes.

• Screening sites include Alzheimer’s agencies, assisted living residences, long-term care facilities, doctors’ offices, hospitals, senior centers, Ys, libraries, pharmacies and other community venues.

• The screening results do not represent a diagnosis; individuals with below-normal scores or those who still have concerns are encouraged to pursue further medical evaluation.

• According to AFA’s “Memory Matters” report, current research supports memory screenings “as a simple and safe evaluation tool that assesses memory and other intellectual functions and indicates whether additional testing is necessary.” To read the full report, visit http://www.alzfdn.org/.

• NMSD is also intended to educate the public about successful aging, including the benefits of proper diet, physical exercise, mental stimulation and stress management. For more information about healthy aging, visit http://www.alzprevention.org/.

• The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is a leading national nonprofit organization headquartered in New York and focused on providing optimal care to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and their families. It unites about 1,600 member organizations nationwide. Visit http://www.alzfdn.org/ or call 866-AFA-8484.

If you are a company/organization who provides products or services geared toward assisting the elderly, the care managers who represent them, or the day-to-day operations of a care management office you should exhibit with us. NAPGCM will host 30 exhibitors this year — trade show space is limited and will sell out. Our sponsorship levels give an outstanding opportunity to showcase your products and services in front of your targeted demographic with a great attendee-to-vendor ratio. Don’t miss this opportunity!

We are expecting 300 geriatric care managers — decision-makers and influencers for the purchase of products and services that support older adults and adults with disabilities. Care Managers ultimately make choices about the direction elder care is headed and provide a variety of services such as assessments, counseling, home care, placement, and guardianship. These professionals work directly with the rapidly growing senior population, their families, and community.
